Denice
Anna Anderson
November 11, 1947 ~ March 4,
2025
1952
Denice Anna Anderson, age 77, of Clinton,
MI, passed away on Tuesday, March 4, 2025,
at Adrian Bay Rehab and Nursing Center.
She had been in poor health for several
years. Born on November 11, 1947, in Detroit,
MI, to the late Carl M. and Geraldine
E. (Willer) Anderson, Denices life
did not begin well. The first 4 years
started out normal, growing up with older
sister Joyce and her parents in Berkley,
MI. Then, in 1952, at the age of four,
she contracted polio. Polio was peaking
in 1952 affecting 37 out of 100,000 people,
killing nearly half a million people worldwide
and leaving many more paralyzed. Coinciding
with her polio diagnosis, her little brother,
Carl, was born in 1952. When admitted
to the hospital, they performed a tracheotomy
to help her breathe. Fortunately, she
responded well to many hours spent in
an iron-lung (see picture
of Denice in front of the iron lung) that
helped her breathe and preserve her lung
function. When discharged, months later,
she suffered some paralysis of her limbs.
Her father, Carl, assisted by her mother,
Gerry, worked relentlessly, every day
to exercise, massage and stretch her arms
and legs. She was not always a willing
participant in these activities! Thankfully,
because of this, she regained full mobility.
She was one of the first patients to receive
the Salk Vaccine after her recovery. Sadly,
her bout with polio did not end there.
In her late 60s, she was diagnosed with
Post Polio Syndrome that often affects
polio survivors years after their
initial polio recovery. While not severely
affecting her at first, it slowly caught
up with her, requiring her to use a cane
to walk, then a walker and finally a wheelchair
while also contributing to her health
decline. She fought through it all, however,
to have a productive, adventurous and
enjoyable life.
She was Confirmed at Gloria Dei Lutheran
Church in Tecumseh. A 1965 graduate of
Clinton High School, Denice continued
her education, acquiring a Bachelor's
Degree in Journalism from Michigan State
University. One of her first official
journalism positions was as
a reporter for the Tecumseh Herald, in
Tecumseh, MI, a position she held off
and on for years during her summer breaks
from school. Many may also remember Denice
as the girl making/selling popcorn at
the Clinton Theater (who would occasionally
sneak a free bag to her little brother).
She always smelled really good when she
got home from work. During her five-years
at MSU, she worked for the student run
MSU Daily News as a Student Editor. After
graduating from MSU in 1971, she continued
her job at MSU while also being hired
by the Lansing State Journal where she
worked for an additional six-years as
a Copy Editor.
This was a very busy, yet enjoyable time
in Denices life. She was working
two jobs, she had a boyfriend, and she
played tennis on a regular basis, took
horse-riding lessons and even became a
rifle sharpshooter (that made her father,
also a military and State Police sharpshooter
very proud). She lived in a nice little
house and pretty much had everything going
for her. Then in 1978 she decided she
had done everything she wanted to do at
the Lansing State Journal there was no
higher positions there that she wanted
and she simply wanted to do something
different so she up and embarked on a
two-year journey around the United State.alone.in
her little Chevy Nova that she often slept
in a very courageous thing for a young
women to do! Her journey took her down
through New Orleans, then the Southwest
and Northwest, spending six or seven months
at a ranch resort in Glacier National
Park in Montana she loved it there the
mountains and cool crisp air. Then she
headed back closer to home to drive all
around Michigan and around Lake Superior.
During her travels, particularly in the
western states, she earned money working
on ranches where she rode horses, lived
in bunk houses, cleaned out stalls and
so forth. she loved it!
Her travels behind her, she then departed
for New York City. again, a very courageous
thing for a young woman to do. In New
York, she lived in a small studio apartment
in downtown New York City, and she worked
as a freelance copy editor developing
relationships with many of the large New
York area publishing houses. She edited
many popular novels, medical articles,
documentaries and a wide assortment of
magazine publications. She rubbed elbows
with many famous authors and even some
actors during her time in New York.
Then in 1989, she once again grew restless
and was looking for new challenges. So,
what did she do? She moved across the
entire country to Santa Fe, New Mexico
and officially settled down there, where
she continued her work as a freelance
copy editor. In 1998, it was back to Clinton
and the old house she grew up in to help
attend to her ailing mother who was living
with her brother, Carl. She continued
her freelance copy editing and even worked
again for a period of time for the Tecumseh
Herald. Around 2012 the last of her publishing
resources, that accepted freelance copy
editing, dried up and she semi-retired
at that time.
All and all, it was a wonderful, productive,
enjoyable and adventurous life that Denice
lived. she was a very kindhearted and
free-spirited person and will be missed.
Denice is survived by her sister Joyce
Anderson of Ypsilanti, her brother Carl
(Josephine) Anderson of Dundee, a nephew,
John (Jean) Anderson, niece, Christa (William)
Branum, niece, Jaime Lange, niece, Kelsi
Capaul and 13-grand nieces and nephews.
A private Celebration of Life
will be held sometime this summer in her
honor. Condolences may be sent to Joyce
or Carl at P.O. Box 38, Dundee, Michigan,
48131.
Thank you is extended to Trinity-St. Joseph
Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, the Mission
Pointe Rehab Center in Ypsilanti, the
Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital
in Adrian, the Adrian Bay Rehab and Nursing
Center and her homecare team of Physicians,
Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Physical
Therapists and the Clinton Fire Department
and Lenawee County, Washtenaw County and

wonderful services they provided in such
a kind and compassionate manner during
the past six-months.

Ann Senkewitz
August 17, 1947 ~ September
30, 2024
Terry Ann (Whiteman) Senkewitz, 77, of
Brooklyn, MI, passed away on September 30,
2024. Terry was born in Tecumseh, MI to
Alan & Thelma Whiteman on August 17,
1947. She attended Clinton high school,
graduating in 1965. While attending Clinton
she was a Majorette, and excelled in band,
playing both flute and piccolo. Her love
of music followed her throughout her life,
as she taught herself to play the banjo
and would accompany her husband John while
he played the guitar. Terry worked for IBM
as a Keypunch Operator for many years. Later
in her career she worked in many office
settings, including working for Columbia
Options School. One of her favorite things
was working with kids, and she volunteered
at Miller Elementary for many years. Terry
had a love of nature, animals, cooking /
baking, furniture restoration, and had a
creative streak a mile wide. Depending on
the day, you may find her with a kitchen
full of freshly made bread, refinishing
a chair, in the woods with a tent and a
campfire or fishing on a bank with a cane
pole (her favorite). She rarely sat still,
unless it was with a good book. She loved
being around kids, and for many years was
THE team mom, who always showed
up with all the supplies needed for any
situation, for whatever game was being played.
One of her favorite hobbies in later years
was feeding everyone. Her self-taught baking
skills were the stuff of (local) legend.
Terry is survived by her husband John Senkewitz
of Brooklyn, her son Michael (Adonia) Senkewitz,
daughter Cathy Senkewitz and grandsons Jacob
Gross, Joshua Gross, Ethan Senkewitz and
Adam Senkewitz. She is preceded in death
by her parents Alan and Thelma Whiteman,
as well as her brothers Jerry (Judi) Whiteman
and Alan Gene (Shirley) Whiteman. Currently
there are no services. Memorial donations

Emails from Cheryl Beasley & Kinda Kinney
below.
Hi
John and Linda,
Barb
Rhoades called me to tell me Nancy Bowman
Garcia passed away Friday
May 8.
Barb called today and said Nancy wanted no
visitation, no service and no announcement
in the papers. John, thought you might want
to put this on our web page. Linda, I know
you try to keep track of our classmates.
Nancy lately has not wanted people to see
her and be with her. Feel bad about this.
I have been getting nice Christmas cards from
her. Had nice talks with her when her dad
and stepmom passed away.
Cheryl
Beasley
Hi
Cheryl and John,
We
have been up at our cabin in Minnesota for
three weeks and just got back last night.
We
had a text from our son saying that Mary Lou
Bowman Coury contacted him and wanted us to
know about Nancy. Nancy is actually Glenn's
second cousin and we see her and her husband
quite frequently. In fact, we saw her about
a month ago at a visitation in Adrian for
another cousin's 55 year old wife!
I
know no details about what happened. Mary
Lou told our son that she had been hospitalized
around Mother's Day. I DO think that she
passed on Friday, June 8th from a vague posting
from another cousin on Facebook. You are
right, Nancy told me several times that she
would not come to our gatherings, but she
always asked about them and her friends.
When we last saw her, she was going to have
surgery on one of her knees that was bothering
her. Her husband, Hector, will be devastated.
She also had two children, a boy and a girl
and two grandsons (I think)
We
were so sorry to get this news. Thank you
for thinking to pass it along. We all need
to keep in touch. This is our third loss
since the 50th: Don, Jerry Whiteman and now
Nancy.
Linda

Sad News, a classmate's parent passes away.. Dennis Bowman's father, George. D. Bowman, passed away on January 13, 2014. Visitation is Jan. 14th, Wed. tomorrow.
George Deloss
Bowman
(December
10, 1922 - January 13, 2014)
George Deloss Bowman was born
December 10, 1922 to Cecile (Johnson) Bowman
and Clarence L. Bowman and died on January
13, 2014 at age 91. He will always be remembered
by his family as a patriot and as the patriarch
not only of his family, but of his community.
He spent the first few years
of his life in Bloomfield Hills before moving
with his family to a farm on Lemm Road in
Manchester. He attended high school in Clinton,
graduating in the Class of 1941. On October
17, 1942, he married Margaret (McDermott)
Bowman. They celebrated their 70th anniversary
in 2012, and she preceded him in death in
August, 2013.
He was drafted in the Army during
World War II and served with the 1881st Aviation
Engineers in New Guinea and the Philippines.
His service to his country was a source of
pride to him as well as his family and the
community. For over 35 years he proudly carried
the American flag in nearly all of the parades
held in Clinton.
After returning home from the
war, George returned to Clinton, and there
he and Margaret raised their 5 children, Dennis
(Paula), Barbara (Steven Stack), Timothy (Sheila
Bork), Kevin (Carolyn), and Mary Kirby (Evan).
He had 9 grandchildren (Colleen, Caroline,
Beth, Amy, Matthew, Erika, Lucas, Alexander

After the war, George owned
and operated a gas station in Clinton. After
a few years, he went to work for Ford Motor
Company, while attending classes at Eastern
Michigan University and Walsh College in the
evening. He was loaned in 1977 by Ford to
be the guest of the Argentine government to
consult with them on automotive production.
He retired as an executive from Ford in 1982.
He holds the record for having
served as Village President of Clinton for
the longest amount of time. While serving
as Village President, he ushered Clinton into
the modern era by paving streets and installing
curbs, gutters and street lights throughout
the Village, and was instrumental in obtaining
the Smith-Kimball home for use as Clinton's
community center.
Retirement did not mean an end
to public service. He served on the Board
of Directors of Saline Hospital for 12 years.
While there he helped them cut their budget
to again become a profitable hospital. He
also became active in the VFW and served as
their Quartermaster and also was active in
the American Legion. He also served on the
Financial Committee of St. Dominic Catholic
Church. Until just a few years ago, he could
be seen each year selling poppies for the
VFW and Tootsie Rolls for the Knights of Columbus.
He enjoyed fine woodworking,
fishing and was a handyman extraordinaire.
When asked what he was most
proud of in his life, George replied that
he was the proudest of his family and his
career.
